Daily Update, October 18, 2022

    Well, our former nurse called early, asking about Val, since I'd texted him last night. We talked briefly, and he said he'd call again late in the day, since he was busy, but he did want to know about Val.

   I read articles, comics, and a web novel in the morning, but I didn't hear from the vet. So I texted an called, asking how Val was doing around lunch time. They texted back slightly into their lunch break. The news wasn't good: his blood sugar was up, and they were worried about him. That did not help my nerves, but I tried to live with it. They sent a picture. He has looked better. They asked if they could run tests. I said please do.

   I read more comics and more of the web novel over lunch.

   I texted Auntie Barbara and our former nurse, letting them know about Val. Auntie Barbara texted back sympathy.

   I hopped into City of Heroes: Homecoming later than I meant to and teamed up with Kitten and Perogies on our warshades. We started the first mission of the next story arc. Partway through, I heard a text - I'm finally learning that sound. It was the veterinarian. They said Val was worse, and declining. They asked me to come visit him ASAP. I told Kitten and Perogies, and they said to go. We didn't even finish the mission. I called Uber. It was nominally 11 minutes away, which gave me time to use the rest room and get back out before he got there. I talked off and on during the ride down.

   I got there, and they took me to Val in the back fairly quickly. He was just lying quietly under a lot of blankets. He wasn't quite asleep, but he was barely moving, and his eyes weren't fully open. They got me an office chair and promised me the vet would come "soon." It seemed like quite a wait for "soon," but she did come eventually. Val got more forehead rubs than he usually will put up with before leaving, but he barely moved.

   The vet showed me his tests. Many numbers were worse, including his blood sugar, which was high again, in the 400's. She said his body may be shutting down. She could not promise he'd survive the night. She mentioned taking him home, but I can't care for him like they can, even if it's just keeping him comfortable. I brought up euthanasia - putting him down - then trailed off, trying to ask for the doctor's opinion. I was so relieved when she suggested one more night. He might not make it through the night, and no one would be there overnight, but... they have more to keep him comfortable, and... we'll see in the morning. She left, and I called her back to make sure he wasn't suffering. She said she'd make sure he was on pain medicine, and that otherwise, no, she wouldn't say he was suffering. So yes, tomorrow is soon enough.

   I got back close enough to dinner that I didn't even try to read to Mom. I did text Auntie Barbara, our former nurse, and the nursing company about Val, and sent chat-texts to Perogies and Kitten. I got a call from our former nurse. He's pretty upset about Val, too, and made me promise to call him as soon as I learn how he's doing in the morning. {bite lips}

   I ate dinner with Mom, read more web novels, and got into City of Heroes: Homecoming, contacting kitten to let them know I was back. Despite being terribly tired, they teamed up with me all evening. Qworty joined us partway through, and only left at his bedtime. I chatted with Kitten, Nox, and Meroa on the chat server. When qworty did leave, I thought of a project we could do that I ended up inviting Meroa to. When it was done, Kitten and Meroa left for bed, and I tried to write this up, and ended up reading more of a web novel. Then I wrote this up, continuing after I meant to stop just to get through it. I'll post it where it's quick and share it in chat tomorrow. Sorry to those who waited.
